Appetite Seminar

This is a day to gather with family and friends, but also to earn that massive midday meal!

Check out the Appetite Seminar. What started as a friendly ride with no more than a dozen folks from Fairfax, CA has now become a Thanksgiving Day tradition for upwards of 2,000 people.  Often a muddy affair, this ride encourages people of all ages to shred before gorging.

More at Charlie Kelly's website here.

And another article about an early event here.

This also happens to be one of the first rides mountain biking legend and general rabble rouser Jacquie Phelan attended.  And almost certainly the first one where she met Charlie Kelly and by extension, her future husband Charlie Cunningham.

Van Lyfe

I've yet to meet Sean Talkington and his band of merry cyclists, but Team Dream does it right time and time agan! They did this shoot to project what a rack might look like on top of Sean's van.  I'd say it needs to happen pronto. The Yeti hanging out there ain't bad either!

Cinelli Bootleg

"Before it even had a name, the Bootleg project began with the crazy requests of Aldo "Rock" Calandro, a man of all too rare a breed, a poet-athlete known in Italy not just as a radio DJ and important figure in the Milanese rock music scene, but also for his poignantly heroic athletic adventures.  It began with a visit to Gran Ciclismo at Via Folli, the store Cinelli kept in front of part of its factory.  Calandro, dreaming of becoming the first Italian to complete the Race Across America, insisted that his next bike, for his greatest adventure yet, must be all black, down to the smallest detail.  Colombo, catching wind of a fracas, came down from his turret to show his face on the shop floor.

"Who is this punk making trouble?"

"Cyberpunk," Calandro replied, without batting an eyelid. "New-Waver, new psychedelic, iron-zen, blade runner."

Columbo needed no further explanation.  "Give the man exactly what he wants," he shouted at a bewildered staff, "regardless of the price."  So a collaboration was born.

Oveja Negra Gearjammer Saddle Bag

Oveja Negra (Black Sheep) is a small shop located in Leadville, CO right off the main drag.  They use top-of-the-line Juki machines to put together their bags made of various types of high quality fabrics, including super lightweight Xpac, 500d Cordura, and 1050d nylon.  Their buckles and bindings are military spec. and they back their velcro attachments with hypalon for durability.  Despite being a new entry into the market, the construction of their bags is top notch.

Keep Cross Weird

My buddy Steven Pamlenyi is to thank for my recent trip to Austin, TX.  Were it not for his stout 2012 Ford Econoline van and marathon driving record, I would've never gotten the ducks lined up in time to get to Austin.  The guys over at The Tennyson Collective told me they had purchased plane tickets for Austin months ago, but being broke I decided to opt out.   On a whim I asked Steven if he'd like to to head to Austin, TX for a few days and having been off the bike dealing with some things back in his home of Minnesota, his stoke meter was high.

Ty Hathaway

Go read up on one of the chillest dudes at Yonder Journal.  Mostly unprepared for a race that most people wouldn't dream of attempting, he finished the Tour Divide Race in one fewer day that he had predicted!

Cyclotourists

Before there were purpose built off-road bikes with drop bars here in the USA, there were tourists grinding up the dirt and chip seal roadways of Europe on machines more than capable of handling rough conditions. Low trail, packable bikes were the non-pareil everyman's bike. Compared to the throwaway racing bikes of the Tour, these were lifetime bikes meant for exploring and making friends.  In my opinion, fun and camaraderie are the best parts of cycling.  Read the article Jan Heine wrote about tourists for the Rivendell Reader in the fall of 2004 below.

I hope y'all read Jan Heine's blog and subscribe to his publication Vintage Bicycle Quarterly!

The future of CX!

Spencer Petrov.  Several times national champion in a couple different age categories.  Rad little dude whom I've gotten lapped by when he was half my age.  Watch out Logan Owen!

Time for a Trip...

To the land of the party brand! I'm very excited to say that I'll be headed down with the Mad Hungarian (Ride Magnetic) to check out Portland South (Austin) and their bandit cross festivities as presented by Jeff at All-City and John Prolly.  There's one official race, but you know there will be impromptu rides and events on the surrounding days!

Find these at Blue Lug!
